Booking a Performance at Loco Lu's
Who We Are at Loco Lu‘s
Loco Lu’s is an inviting blend of coffee shop/café, community meeting house, art gallery, and music venue. We are a non-smoking facility (though smoking is permitted outside the cafe). We offer music several nights a week. Weekly we have our Monday Night Open Mic. First and Third Wednesdays are Acoustic Jam. We have recently received our food service permit to serve food. In additional to outstanding espresso, coffee tea, milkshakes, smoothies, and baked goods, we now offer an array of hot/cold sandwiches, soups, salads, pasta dishes, and both hot and cold appetizers. The menu is expanding rapidly.
We strive to provide a warm and welcoming environment to gather, make friends, or just kick-back and relax. Unlike typical coffee shops that focus on the 18-35 yr age bracket, our mission is to create an environment in which everyone of every background feels “part of the family”. Speak to our regulars and you’ll find this to be true of our cafe.
Please See Our Website (for directions, menu, schedule, etc): www.LocoLu.com For Our Full Schedule: www.LocoLu.com/calendar.html
Performances at Our Cafe
We actively support community, and creative, entrepreneurial and small business efforts. The art exhibited in the cafe is created by artists in the surrounding community. Though the majority of musicians performing at the cafe are local to the triangle, the community has continuously expanded to include both musicians across North Carolina and from many other states as well.
Performances at our cafe include all genres of music, spoken word, comedy, and dance. We truly have had nearly everything from Opera to hip-hop, including but not limited to: Indy, folk, traditional, world, jazz, blues, rhythm and Blues, pop, polka, swing, Dixie, and rock. Music is a diverse creative endeavor, and should be enjoyed in all of its forms.
Here at the cafe we have a basic guide for your performance selection. “What you perform can’t offend a 7 yr old. More importantly it can’t offend a 7 yr old’s mother…because she’ll likely do something about it.”
There is only one exception to that fence. Monthly we will be having an adult comedy Open Mic event. Though comedians should be mindful of our aversion to offend, we recognize in comedy what is amazingly funny to one, may be offensive to another. This is not a show for children nor those easily offended.
There are some rules. - Performances must be “R” or less. No “X” content or delivery. - We will inquire about the content before the performance and decline to include anything we find objectionable. - If we find your performance is objectionable, we will interrupt and at our discretion either allow you to continue or stop your performance. - We will modify the rules, as needed, WITHOUT NOTICE.

“Rules of the Road” - What We Ask of You / Things You’ll Need To Do:
1) Understand Our Vision and Who We Are. 2) Provide a “Press Kit”. We need both hard copy and an electronic copy of your Press Kit plus samples of music. The electronic version is used in the web page we create for you on our website. Please also provide at least six (6) posters for us to post in the café 2 weeks in advance of your performance.
3) Become Part of Our Community - Support Our Efforts and Those of Other Musicians. Some or all of your band must participate in the Monday Open Mic Night the week before and preferably also two weeks before your performance date. We all need to create a “Buzz” about your performance. We’d also like to see you supporting other musicians and the cafe by joining us for performances by others (especially those just starting out and those trying to build a following). Buy something while you’re here, so we can keep the lights on.
4) Promote Your Performance. Please promote the event, our Coffeehouse/Café, our menu, and bring as many buying fans as you can. The reality of the situation is the more buying folks you bring... the better we all do. It also helps ensure we‘ll be able to continue to support and grow local live music.
We gladly spend a lot of time, energy, emotion, and money to support music, make local music available and to advertise your performance . Please help us by spending the time and energy to promote your show and help assure that you bring a good crowd.
Again, if we have a good turn out from a buying audience, we’ll all be able to continue the music, and you‘ll benefit too.
Use your email mailing list. Your current followers love your performance and would love Loco Lu’s as well.
Post your own Fliers. Provide Loco Lu’s with at least six fliers (eight would be better) at least two weeks before the date of the show. Sorry, we can’t print them for you. You can either drop the fliers at the cafe or mail them via USPS - - - just make sure to put to ATTN: BOOKING on whatever you leave/mail.
NOTE: DON’T POST FLYERS ON PUBLIC POLES, BENCHES, etc. We can’t afford the fines and we will transfer payment of that fine to you.
Don’t forget…we need some or all of your band to participate at our Open Mic the week before and preferably also two weeks before your event to help build the “buzz“about music at Loco Lu’s as well as your band.
If you are part of a series/dual lineup, you should include the other artists involved in your promotions.
Please include something like the following in your promotions: “Loco Lu’s is a warm, inviting blend of coffeehouse, café, meetinghouse, venue, and art gallery. The cafe offers a great menu of hot and cold sandwiches, chili and soups, salads, pasta, and desserts along with outstanding espresso, coffees, teas, milkshakes, and smoothies. Check www.LocoLu.com for hours, menu, directions, events, and more.”
Please take a minute to "friend" us (or become a "fan") at our other sites (cross-promotion helps!). We'll do the same for you. Also, if you’ve got your own web-site, put a link to our home page, www.LocoLu.com, on your website. We’ll do the same from the page we build for you on our website.
Our sites include:
Our main site: www.LocoLu.com Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000302833021 Reverbnatiom: http://www.reverbnation.com/#!/venue/locolus
It is also very important that you also place your performance event on the following Event Posting Sites (They‘re Free. Remember, many hands make light work). Facebook.com MySpace.com mync.com zvents.com raleighmusic.com reverbnation.com insiderpages.com raleigh-durham.entertainment.com triangle source.com eventful.com our stage.com localtriangle411.com craigslist.com (events, music groups) We are listed on these as a venue.
5) Help Us With Your Performance.
PLEASE NO FOOD OR DRINK ON THE HOUSE PIANO.
We’re here to help. Please take our suggestions/directions.
Be prompt and Prepared. Arrive ½ hour before the performance. Be sure your equipment is ready before occupying the performance area. After your performance please clear the performance area quickly. There is likely another performer or activity following you. If you're is the last performance of the evening, we need you to move quickly so that we may clean and setup for the next day.
Our cafe is equipped with a combination of 4 channel mixer and 8 channel Peavey Amp, speakers, two mic stands and 2 mics. We are also quite blessed by the generous support of Maus Piano, who provides the cafe with a great piano. We have a highlighted performance area that has worked well for both small and large groups. The cafe layout is, by design, adjustable to allow us to accommodate circumstances as they evolve. What you are expected to bring: 1) Sounds, a little silly to say, but bring your instruments. We’ve no backup for you. You are welcome to use the house piano or bring your own keyboard. PLEASE NO FOOD OR DRINK ON THE HOUSE PIANO.
2) If you are bringing your own amplifiers, etc. Bring your own speakers too. Our speakers are for use with our system only. We do have final say on volume selection.
3) Bring your own mics, mic stands, and guitars cords. Although the cafe has a small supply, it is reserved for our Open Mics, group meet-ups, and other special events.
4) Bring your guitar picks, instrument stands, etc. - Ours are marked with blue, green, or yellow tape colors. Also, please be sure not to inadvertently include any of our equipment when you pack up to leave (We have something scheduled most nights and that makes it hard to recover the pieces in time for the next performance).
Be courteous on entry to the cafe. Often other performers or activities might be going on when you arrive. On arrival have a member of your group enter through the front to let us know you’ve arrived and we’ll open the back doors for you to bring in your equipment. Its good etiquette. Leave the seating area for customers. Please don’t put cases or equipment on the tables, against the walls, or anywhere in the customer seating or traffic areas. Space is a premium and must be dedicated to serving our customers. Store your cases and equipment in the space we’ve set aside for them at back of the cafe. We prefer you unpack in the “Blue Room“ and leave your cases, etc in the storage area before proceeding to the performance area. If you have other requirements, please see one of us and we’ll see what we can do. There is also sufficient room behind the performers for instrument stands if you wish to you use them.
Bring your Cds and merchandise if you’ve got them. We’ll setup a table for you.
6) Use Our Email List Signup Sheets.
We will provide a sheet for email list signups. THIS IS A SHARED LIST BETWEEN LOCO LU‘S AND YOUR BAND AND IT IS THE ONLY SIGNUP METHOD ALLOWED. We’ll both benefit from this approach.
7) Respect Our Customers and Our Business.
Please treat our guests with both courtesy and respect. They have granted both Loco Lu’s and you the privilege of serving them.
Our patrons do come for the music. They also come for the community, conversation, and the food/beverages. Their continued patronage is extremely important to us, and, by extension, to you as well. There may be walking, talking, eating, etc. while you perform. The best way to engage the audience is to let them be themselves and to draw them in by having fun and being entertaining, and not sweating the little stuff. Let them be themselves and they’ll come back because they had a great time DURING YOUR PERFORMANCE.
Our customers, our vision, and our business are everything to us. Work with us with that understanding. Take our suggestions and direction. Be part of our community.
Thanks for helping us make Raleigh a great place for music! _______________________________________
